Ingredients

  • 1 cup oat flour 90 g; from ~1¼ cups rolled oats, blitzed
  • 1 medium ripe banana, mashed about ½ cup
  • 1/4 cup smooth peanut butter 60 g; xylitol-free only
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup plain canned pumpkin 60 g; 100% pumpkin — NOT pie filling
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tbsp water if needed to loosen the batter
Frosting
  • 1 medium sweet potato, cooked and mashed about ¾ cup; plain, no butter or sugar
  • 2 tbsp plain Greek yogurt optional; skip for dairy-sensitive dogs
To decorate
  • Fresh blueberries, banana slices, and a small dog biscuit

Method

  1. Blitz 1¼ cups rolled oats into a fine flour; measure out 1 cup. Heat oven to 350°F (175°C); line a 6-inch round pan with parchment.
  2. Mash the banana, then stir in the peanut butter, egg, and pumpkin until smooth.
  3. Stir the baking powder into the oat flour, then fold the flour into the wet mixture until just combined; add water a tablespoon at a time if the batter is stiff.
  4. Spoon into the pan (or 6 lined muffin cups for pupcakes) and bake 20–25 minutes (15–18 for pupcakes), until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
  5. Cool in the pan 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack and cool completely, 30–45 minutes.
  6. Mash the sweet potato until completely smooth; stir in the Greek yogurt (if using). Spread over the cool cake, swirl, and decorate with blueberries, banana slices, and a dog biscuit. Light a candle for the photo only — blow it out and remove it before serving.

Notes

The peanut butter MUST be xylitol-free — check the label (also listed as "birch sugar"). Xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs. No chocolate, no cocoa powder, no grapes or raisins, no sugar, no salt. For a chocolatey look, use carob powder (2 tbsp) — never cocoa. The pumpkin can MUST say 100% pumpkin — pie filling contains sugar, spices, and sometimes xylitol. Frost only a completely cool cake, or the frosting slides off. Candles: photo only, then remove before serving. This is a treat, not a meal — one small slice per dog; treats under 10% of daily food. The rest freezes well (unfrosted slices, up to 2 months). Storage: frosted cake in the fridge 3–4 days; frosting on its own 2–3 days refrigerated. Discard if off-smelling or slimy.
